Let us come out of the cave!
The Hurtado Urban Retreat Day was attended by nearly 30 people from around Tower Hamlets and beyond. Each one responded to the invitation to “rest, re-connect and renew” in their own way. One of the stories participants were invited to reflect on was that of the prophet Elijah taking time to rest in a cave before coming out to hear God’s voice. Many went away with new motivation to make space for reflection; or a deeper sense of their journey; or simply a little refreshed. Here’s one person’s notes about their day…
What are you doing here? What are you looking for? We were asked these questions as introduction to the Urban Retreat. Immediately they struck me as significant and applicable. Not just for the day, but for tomorrow too; ‘tools’ to self-appraise – my (entire) life and all the activities that I fill ‘it’ with. Very specific lines of inquiry. For me & my God. Why do You want me here? What do You want me to find? I did ask God these questions about the Urban Retreat Day. I think I heard Him say: ‘Receive’ My Love. ‘Find’ My people. ‘Share’ in Me together. Let us come out of the cave! Some people are really (really) good at loving God; but not that great at loving His ‘people’. I think God wants both. Spiritual fellowship in community, such as this Retreat Day, is a way into ‘practicing’ this.
